Dancing the hog’s trough at a wedding?
A country wedding tradition that is still widely practiced in many rural farming communities in the mid-west is “dancing the hog’s trough”. This typically happens when a younger daughter marries before an elder sister. The tradition is that the elder sister is required to “dance in a hog’s trough” in front of the wedding party at the reception.
I have seen this rural farming custom a few times. One instance comprised of the elder sister participant performing a simple jig in a plastic tub in Indiana, to a north central Ohio wedding, where the custom is practiced by the elder sister donning heavy boots and dancing and kicking in a wooden trough, which includes kicking the trough apart. I am not exactly sure when and where this tradition began, but it is one of those quirky farm folk traditions that everyone in these parts know about. The event is always in good fun and is a teasing reminder that the elder daughter needs to get busy and find a husband!
